Meet-ups
Sunday August 24th - Wednesday August 27th 2003 (HMG) - [Put online September 20th 2003]
For our last week in Iceland, we kicked into "Let's go say hi to everybody!!"-gear and did just that. The first "get-together" was for dinner on the Sunday we returned from Laugarvatn, with Jóhann and Kata and their cute-as-pumpkin-pie daughter Þóra Kolbrún.
Hrefna, Finnur, Þóra, Kata and Jóhann. Jóhann and Finnur are old work/school-buddies,
and Jóhann and Kata are the only people (actually travelling from Iceland) that have
stayed with us in the USA! To top it all off, they live in the north of Iceland, and just
happened to be in town for us to meet up! How convenient!! :)
We met at a Grillhouse and Þóra had much fun munching on my "freedom" fries! :)
Kata holding Þóra.
And the whole family! :) So very cute! :)
Monday August 25th
On Monday "Finnur the Amazing Computer Fixer-Upper Guy" went to inspect
the new old-computer his niece Ragnheiður had just got. He also took time to
look at Ragnheiður's stamp collection along with Margrét, Ragnheiður's little sister.
Somehow Finnur's sister Eyrún then made the "logical" jump that
since Finnur's good with fixing computers, he might be good at fixing
vacuum cleaners!!! He obliged by opening it up and pronouncing it DOA... ;)
(DOA = Dead On Arrival)
Tuesday August 26th
We stopped by Finnur's grandpa's place to inspect the newly redone garden.
It looked very very nice! :)
Visiting grandpa Eymundur (on the left) was his next door neighbor,
pastor Eiríkur. Here they are sharing a nice cup of coffee on the balcony
in the balmy weather... :)
Next stop was Sonja and Clint's place. Sonja (an old classmate of Hrefna)
had just given birth to Kamilla two weeks earlier and Hrefna got to try her out! :)
Sonja and Clint have also visited us in the USA, but didn't stay at our place
since Clint's family lives in the Bay Area.
Finnur, on the other hand, tried out their two parrots! :)
Hrefna used the opportunity to take close ups... and hit the exact
few minutes when Kamilla was farting and generally very active in
the "lower" part of her body, which caused her to look very concentrated...
"What's going on?! These bodily functions are very confusing!!" :)
Sonja (on the phone to a breast-feeding consultant) and the boys, Clint and Finnur,
in front of a laptop. Turns out Finnur could help Clint with a couple of
computer issues... surprise, surprise!! :)
Sonja with Kamilla, which at this point wanted to get her diaper changed
(...We think!! Who knows!!)! Btw, Kamilla has her own website!!
After leaving Sonja and Clint's place, Finnur and I split up, he went to see an
old friend and I went to see some old girlfriends, namely Helga and Hjördís! :)
It so happens that Helga (on the left) was then 16 weeks pregnant and Hjördís
already has a kid, so guess what we talked about!! :)
After catching up with old friends, we went to my uncle Arnar's place and had
a Christmas-style dinner with Magnea and Eyþór, which was a perfect way to end
a busy day. :)
Wednesday August 27th
On Wednesday, we finally made good on our promise to my grandmother
to move our stuff out of the garage we've been keeping it in, and into a smaller
storage in the same house. The garage used to house the belongings of three
families, but since we were the only one left, she wanted to lease the garage.
I'd like to point out that only 85% of that pile actually belongs to us! :)
There are four garages next to each other, (all built by my grandfather,
who passed away last summer, and now owned by my grandmother,
who also owns the adjoining building) and this one houses my
late-grandfather's woodshop.
A third garage houses more of granddad's stuff/machines, among
them a car-trailer my father, the welder, made many years ago.
After less than two hours of walking back and forth (no, I did not carry anything heavy)
we'd emptied out our stuff, and this is what was left.
Now our stuff lives in a little room and we hope it will be happy there.
Finnur tying a chair to a hook on the wall, in case of an earthquake...
(at least the chair should survive) :)
After all the moving, we split up again, with Finnur going to Inga's place
(that's his sister, and yes, there was a computer there in need of help) and
me going to Hildur's place.
Adda and Hildur in the living room.
Hildur and Óli's daughter, Þórdís.
She likes to smile a lot! :)
Hildur & Co. live in Mosfellsbær (same town as Finnur's parents)
but more "out in the country", which allowes them the luxury of
a greenhouse and...
... a swimming pool, both in their backyard!!!
As always, the time flew by, and I was very late for our dinner at Inga's... but all
went well, the dinner was great, and afterwards, Steinunn (the youngest sibling)
creamed us in Settlers...
